This astonishing memoir of Shackleton's final voyage explores courage, tenacity and unflagging hope in the face of adversity. Including Frank Hurley's incomparable photographs of the expedition, South remains one of the greatest adventures of the twentieth century.

Praise for South:

'For scientific discovery give me Scott; for speed and efficiency of travel give me Amundsen; but when disaster strikes and all hope is gone, get down on your knees and pray for Shackleton.'
