Rafael Alvarez is a novelist based in his native Baltimore. He learned to write on the city desk of the Baltimore Sun. He is the author of a number of story collections, including The Fountain of Highlandtown and Orlo and Leini, and he occasionally works as a labourer on ships crewed by the Seafarers International Union. He was a writer on all five seasons of The Wire.
