Patrick Süskind was born in 1949. He studied history in Munich and was a writer for television before enjoying success as a playwright in the early 1980s with The Double Bass. His first work of fiction, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, was an international sensation and has sold millions of copies. He is also the author of The Pigeon, The Story of Mr Sommer and Three Stories and a Reflection.
